Julia Douglas

My lovely wife, Julia Douglas (Usher), this week launched her exhibition in Timespan in Helmsdale, Sutherland, Scotland.

I spent a few days up there too which culminated in the Highland Games with this year's Chieftain being Edwyn Collins.

The landscape, the hospitality and especially the people, make Helmsdale one of my favorite places in Scotland.

Close-Knit

Julia Douglas has been Timespan's artist in residence over the last two months and this exhibition is the culmination of her time spent with the people of Helmsdale.

Julia has worked with the wonderful knitting ladies, local youth and heritage group on investigating the history and culture of the crofters cleared from the Strath of Kildonan and those that lived in Badbea clearance village just over the border in Caithness.

The knitting ladies and local youngsters have assisted Julia in creating many parts of this installation.

Julia is a visual artist, designer-maker and arts educator based near Edinburgh. Through her work she investigates people's relationship to houses, household objects and furnishings. Her work is designed to entertain you and make you think about this relationship afresh. This project was made possible through the generous support of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the European Community Highland LEADER 2007-2013

The chaff has gone, even a few of the larger agencies have crumbled due to their foolish personal expense budgets, a blatant disregard for employees and short sighted approach to the sector.

Companies need to market... everyone still needs to set up their stall and sell their product.

Smaller in size but a boutique turnkey solution, Bluemungus are shining through the mist of the so called recession by working hard, playing nicely and treating clients not just as associates, but as friends.

Creative solutions are not all about the tank tops & the cars... personalities, level heads, professional attitudes, adaptability and a wee bit of a laugh are strengths that I see in this new media team to surface in Scotland.

Introducing Julia Douglas Usher & Colin Douglas Usher

Saturday 29th August saw my lovely Julia and I getting married.

Tyninghame village hall was the venue. Tim Maguire was the Humanist Celebrant and a cast of over 100 beautiful family and wonderful friends.

My best man George (my brother), Willie Stark and myself drummed Julia into the hall while the aforementioned cast shook 'egg shakers' to welcome the most beautiful thing in my life down the aisle.

Tim Maguire held a fantastic humanist ceremony which had everyone is giggles and tears throughout.

My best bud Steve Scott read for us as well as the gorgeous Caroline Lambie.

Julia said yes and I agreed :)

Our good friend Avril Somerville hand made our rings which were also perfect. Thanks Avril xxxxxxx

Now, the cake! Jess & Martin Wilson had made us a wedding cake from cheeses with little oatcake Julia & Colin on top.... Stunning!!!!!

Perfect speaches from Peter Snow (my new step dad) and George Usher were followed by 2 beautiful and heart warming readings from my Mum Ruth Gibson. Thank you so much.

I'll stop gushing for now.

So, I am a few weeks into self training in MODO 401. The affordable way to create in 3d...

It's a very steep learning curve and does take time so I am pretty chuffed at the progress so far.

For any visual artist, designer, videographer or budding animator, this is the application you need to get your head round. Trust me, I searched for ages.

In Edinburgh 283, Eight Edinburgh-based photographers are each exhibiting three images expressing their own unique take on Scotland’s capital during the other 283 festival-free days. This weekend, I drove up to Helmsdale in Sutherland to visit Julia while she was on her artist residency with TimeSpan.

First impression were of a backward 'past-it' village (especially when I saw a sign on the harbour that said, NO NET WORKING) until I was ingratiated into the local food, sights and people's company.

Timespan is a very interesting attraction. It's a museum, Gallery, Cafe and experiential visitor attraction.

Whilst there, I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening of a photographic exhibition by Fin Macrae.

On Sunday, Julia & I stayed in the pub a little too long chatting to locals so we missed any opportunity to eat! We snuck into La Mirage while the staff were all eating and pleaded... We were most happy to walk away with 2 pie suppers and smiles on our faces...

I was surprised this week to learn that a mate in Glasgow, Aldo Cruickshank who is one of the tour team for The Proclaimers, has an album coming out very soon.

Garry John Kane (Proclaimers bass player and owner/manager of Button Up Records) asked me to help out with the album cover and release stuff...

The 7 track album is nice wee slice of singer / songwriter alt country/indie rock.

Gave it a listen through last night a few times and am well impressed.

Nice to see an un-discovered gem being promoted by a cool indie label in Glasgow. There's hope for us all yet.

I am, of course, well chuffed by this as I was a huge fan of the Wonderstuff and recently met Erica when she played Edinburgh Castle in 2008 with The Proclaimers.

Looking forward to hearing their set and playing a wee 30 min acoustic set on the night.

Wasted Youth

Back in 1995, I was helping paint the set in an old school in Pilton, Edinburgh. On the 2nd day, the producer approached me and asked if I could act. I said no of course but would be happy to audition for a wee something in the film...

That night, there was a knock on my door in Thistle street around 10pm. It was said producer clutching the full script for Bruce Naughton's new feature Wasted Youth.

So, thinking that I may have won a wee extra part I welcomed her in and she immediately told me that I was to play the lead roll and shooting started the next morning!

Now, not being trained in any way on technique, learning lines, delivery, posture or any of the other 1000 elements around acting, I set to work on the script to find out that I had to learn 3 pages for an argument scene then next morning.

Anyhoo.... 5 weeks of this passed and the film eventually got it's 1st screening at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Here we are 19 years later... Bruce gave me the Beta tape of the film and we've agreed to launch it online in full to give it a wee bit of life.

We were honored to be invited by Ellie & old school friend of mine, Scott... to the christening of wee Alfie. Their gorgeous wee boy.

Not only was it an awesome day but I got to spend some time back at Queen Victoria School, where I was a boarder from 1981 to 1987. Seeing the pipe band march past put a serious lump in my throat and reminded me of the intense sense of pride we have regarding the school and especially the pipe band.

Scott and I played in the band from 1st year through 5th year and we played every (5 Nations) Scottish Rugby Union game at Murrayfield as well as many other engagements over the years.

The only person there from our days was Graham Carroll (Skip Carroll). What an amazing chap... not only remembering me after all these years but sending his best to my brother too. I remember the 1st icy rugby training session on the playing fields and the general feeling of fear was calmed by Graham's excellent way with the lads.

Anyhoo, thanks again for the invite to Scott & Ellie Johnstone. Glad we've finally caught up :)

Last week saw the opportunity for myself & Ken to grab a second hand plane. Of course it is VERY cheap but will be a great wee vehicle to go solo in as we lead up to our GFT (General Flight Test)

We still have to test fly it as soon a possible but hopefully all will be fine.

I have now flown 15 hours in training and am looking forward to steep turns, emergency landings and more and more circuits... hopefully solo isn't too far away and if the weather holds out in East Lothian...

It is a study of the awkwardness expressed by most people when having their photograph taken and how we naturally pose with an uncontrollable unnatural posture and expression.

Gig at the Guilty Lily

A good friend of ours, Amanda, has 2 amazing bars in Edinburgh & Portobello.

She asked us (Ten Storeys High) to play at the Guilty Lily on Friday there.... we did a wee intimate and semi-acoustic set to a fantastic wee crowd as well as break in our new rhythm guitarist/piano player, Aly Barr.

Top night was had by all and we look forward to playing at the Esplanade (The Espy) in Portobello on Friday 27th March too.

Try and get down there (even if it's not to see us...) the food is amazing.

When people refer to the waterfront amusements in Portobello, it is difficult to know whether they are talking about the arcades or the current state of the pubs and restaurants. That was until the recent introduction of The Esplanade, aka The Espy, the jewel of the Edinburgh Riviera.

The Venue
At the end of Bath Street with big windows overlooking the beach, The Espy has laid down the gauntlet with its prime location. Parking is not so easy so be prepared for a short walk along the beach or from the high street.

Inside, the pub is divided into two by the enormous bar. In the south end of the pub you can sink into huge, but almost garish, floral print sofas, perch on high bar stools or sit bolt upright in high backed dark leather chairs. The first rule of the north end is that you must eat. The second rule of the north end is that you must eat a lot. This family friendly pub – children are only allowed in the food area – is concentrating fiercely on food.

Leith locals with a keen eye may notice similarities to Guilty Lily on Bonnington Road. This is because they are run by the same team and have brought the same warm glow. Candles, kitsch and board games fill the pub, and it is finished with nice touches such as maritime trinkets and a display of children’s pictures of Portobello, which, if you are of a certain age, can’t help but make you feel like Tony and Margot commentating on the gallery in Hartbeat.

If board games are not your bag, Sunday is usually movie night (it depends on the demand), offering cult classics like Mallrats and Withnail and I, and a couple of times a month, Friday is live music night offering jazz, bluegrass, local bands and more. If in doubt contact the venue or check the website in advance.

The People
The staff are enormously welcoming, for those used to the conventional perfunctory British seaside service this may teeter on the brink of being overbearing, but no harm is meant.

The pub is crammed with families who have come to enjoy the wind battered promenade, build sandcastles, play on the grabber and tell tales of the fateful day in 2007 when the sewage came. The locals have also clutched The Espy to their bosom, stopping off for refreshment mid dog walk or whiling away afternoons in the best place in town.

The Food
The portions are huge and the choice is just as daunting. Starters and sharers include sociable and innovative dips with toasted flatbreads (£4.50) or a whole baked camembert (£6.95) that sticks gloriously to the teeth, tongue, face and fingers. The spicy veggie burger is one of the finest in town (£6.95). An enormous plump patty is stuffed with lentils, beans, sweet potato and the majority of the vegetable kingdom. Lashings of Thai sweet chilli and thick sour cream make a refreshing change from cheese and a weighty stack of chips are used to prevent the burger from toppling. The specials board may offer a thick gravy filled venison pie or a hearty portion of the not so trendy and slightly fiddly, but indisputably delicious braised oxtails with carrots and smooth mash (prices vary between £6-£14). Keep an eye out for the bangers and mash which verge on the obscene in their proportion and display.

The number of veggie options on the specials board is not fixed, as a result it can either excite or hugely disappoint. Those who hate to leave food may also be disappointed unless they have fasted for a number of days before visiting. Booking at the weekend is advisable.

The Drink
A short but elegant and reasonable wine list includes a lot of trustworthy names such as Concha y Toro’s Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon (£3.20 per glass or £12.50 for a bottle) and Peter Lehmann’s sparkling Shiraz (£30). The usual beers are on offer as well as juices, teas, hot chocolates, coffee and pop.

The Last Word
When The Espy is the only choice, it is a good job that it is the perfect place to refuel before more frolicking by the Firth of Forth.

BBC Rugby WHY oh WHY is Brian Moore there!?

So, here's an easy way to spoil a great game of rugby (or at least the entertainment value in it).

Is it just me or does Brian Moore simply spend his time looking for constant negatives whilst commentating on the rugby or is he just a nippy old fart by nature?

This guy is being paid to constructively commentate on National TV for the rugby and all he seems to do is work off a rather bad hangover during the 80 mins.

Get a grip Brian and try to remember that most of us like a laugh as well as appropriate, intelligent and entertaining commentary of the Rugby Union games. If you can't be arsed, then stop doing it!

The Proclaimers Vs Kings of Leon

The Proclaimers are in the legendary Rockfield studio in wales recording the new album this month and will be heading over to the South by Southwest music festival/seminar in March.

I shot this in Edinburgh's Colorsound Studio where the band practice and did the edit over the weekend.

Happy New Year to all.

We had a nice wee cosy one in Barrel Cottage, Julia, Becca D & Me. Popped over to visit Callum & Roz in Haddington then home for the bells and some STV / BBC Scotland cheuchter pish!

Sharleen Spiteri was a good watch... only because mate Ross was on drums looking dapper with new facial hair!

So any resolutions I hear you ask! Well yup. The smoking HAS to stop. Julia & I are going for it on Sunday. Fingers crossed.

Looking forward to the year... loads happening with our wedding coming up in August, hoping to sit my general flight test this year too... lessons are going well.

THE LOST SOUL BAND

As the poster states:

'One of the most criminally overlooked bands to come out of Scotland in the past 15 years!'

I wholeheartedly agree.

So, really quite chuffed when I spoke to Mike Hall from the band and he arranged for Ten Storeys High to be the support for the Edinburgh gig.

Mike also mastered our album and plays keys on a few tracks too.

Back in the 90s I frequented a great wee bar called the Green Tree where on any given nights you could wonder in for a pint or 10 and bump into any combination of Gordon Grahame (guitar, vocals), Michael Hall (piano, organ), Brian Hall (drums), Richard Buchanan (bass), Gavin Smith (percussion, backing vocals) not to mention the Swamptrash guys and many others...

Gordon played many an acoustic solo set in the bar most weeks and I enjoyed watching the band grow through their record deal and local gigs.

So, really looking forward to seeing them play again after all this time.

The gig is on 28th December at The Liquid Room Edinburgh

Hopefully see some Ten Storeys High gang there to see The Lost Soul band too...

The Thrill Of The Fall (Sweet Day Records) (****)

Edinburgh’s acoustic four piece Ten Storeys High’s debut album glides on a cool dusk breeze from start to finish through eleven well balanced and immaculately produced tracks. Through-the-night driving music or sunday afternoon with the papers, this collection will not distract you into fist-pumping sing-along air guitar, but being a gentle toe tapper is no disgrace as I am sure they are aiming at the more thoughtful ear anyway.

With Ten Storeys High you are more likely to start listening to the storytelling craft in the lyrics than the pinched harmonics (there aren’t any anyway) which again is spot on for this bit-more-than-completely-acoustic genre. Hitting on the likes of Travis now and again, especially in “Fragile” and ‘Former Working Class Hero’ the guys obviously worked hard on the arrangements as they get everything they can out of the songs which presumably started out as one voice and one guitar. It’s good to hear a band thinking from the listener’s perspective for a change.

Callum Macguire’s vocals do soar in this relatively exposed environment and they never falter under the spartan acoustic set up around him. At times Ewan Beck’s compelling, bubbling bass threatens to break out (’Disfunctional’) but alas is often also restricted in the mix or the musical environment, shame.

Ten Storeys High have found their place and appear completely comfortable in what they do and that is only where the album falters slightly as there are no real edgy spark or risky shortcuts taken, just a steady journey. Maybe the fall is too thrilling and not dangerous enough.

A good listen on CD or live, so definitely not guys to pass by.

I went to the vet on Saturday with my master, Colin and his mate Greg chummed us to look after me in the car.

I don't know why they always spell out the word like V... E... T... I didn't mind it at all!

I met another Labrador but he was quiet and older... looked like a hunting dog in training as his master was really dour and they weren't saying much.

I got weighed and was given my second injection. This means that I can go outside the grounds of the house on Saturday... canny wait!

My cuddly pheasant was fixed this week too so I've been going a bit radge with that. I'll try and get Colin to take a picture of me with it soon.

Hello... my dad, Colin is going to let me post my stories here.

I recently went to my new home, Barrel Cottage, where I met my new Mum & Dad; Julia & Colin"

On Saturday night i just got settled in the cottage and had a wee play with my Grouse and bone. Listened to a wee bit of Elbow while the auld yins had their tea (I think my favourite track is 'Perfect Weather to Fly' from the album 'Seldom Seen Kid').

Sunday saw us spending a lot of time in the garden as it was a braw day in East Lothian. I'm getting a little bit used to the lead thing they put on me for the garden but I still don't really like it.

Helicopters and planes flew over a few times as well as a few cars driving passed the house but i wasn't bothered at all...

I am currently trying to confuse them both by eating grass... they'll suss it out soon enough.

...for scooping the Mercury Music Award 2008.

You'll see from an earlier post that I absolutely love this band. They deserve it all.

18 years together and a few 'nippy' record label moments... goes to show, if a band's worth keeping together, it doesn't matter how long it takes.

here's a snippet from the NME...

Elbow claimed that their Nationwide Mercury Prize victory is "the best thing that's ever happened to us" during their acceptance speech tonight (September 9) in London.

The group, who were awarded a £20,000 cheque for their fourth album 'The Seldom Seen Kid', seemed genuinely overawed at their accolade.

Speaking from the podium, singer Guy Garvey said: "Thank you very much. I'd like to thank all the players we've been with since day one, including Phil Chadwick, our manager.

"This is the best thing that's ever happened to us. We'd like to dedicate this award to Brian Glancy, one of the greatest men who ever lived. Thank you very much and have a top evening!"

Glancy, a late friend of the band, is honoured by the band as 'the seldom seen kid' of the album's title.

Garvey later explained his surprise at the band's victory, saying: "I had a tenner on Radiohead. It just feels great, very unexpected. You look at it in the same way as Bedouin tribes look at a pint of milk. It doesn't happen very often but it's all the sweeter.

Buckley's Chance Gig in Leith

We're playing a gig at The Compass in Leith on Friday 5th September (9pm onwards)

This has to be my album of the year for 2008 and we're nowhere near the end of it either!

It's rare that I run out to HMV and go straight for an album these days.

I'd heard the singles 'Grounds for Divorce' & 'One Day Like This' on the trannie in the car and then saw them performing at Glastonbury on TV...

From start to finish, this is a piece of genius, the production is stunning, the songwriting inspiring and the performances of all involved are no less than on point.

I'd urge all of you to grab this now.

Edinburgh Castle Triumph

So, filming The Proclaimers at Edinburgh castle on Saturday 19th July was an absolute hoot.

I spent the whole 90mins of the performance ducking around on stage with Craig & Charlie, Stevie Christie (keyboards), Gary John Kane (Bass), Zach Ware (guitars) and Clive Jenner (Drums... Clive also plays for The Freestylers and has been the Groove Armada drummer too...)

For Sunshine on Leith, the awesome Erica Nockalls played fiddle and I can swear.... 8,500 people in the crowd were either crying or swaying or chanting.

Also, for The Proclaimers' cover of Whole Wide World, Wreckless Eric was there with his guitar and sensational stage presence.

We will be editing the movie real soon and maybe even see a DVD release of the gig in the near future.

Leonard Cohen at Edinburgh Castle

Last night I was privileged to have an AAA pass to Edinburgh Castle to see Leonard Cohen and to check out camera positions for filming The Proclaimers there on Saturday. I chummed Procs manager Kenny MacDonald...

The gig was nothing but stunning!

One moment that stood out for me and almost had me in tears was his 'A Thousand Kisses Deep' which he spoke out to the Edinburgh crowd in his enduring and impressively low voice.

"Peddler of misery!" No chance... he made me smile.

Moving Times

So, moving to a lovely cottage at the edge of a field this weekend... Can't wait.

Huge garden, our own wee stream and even a small private wood! (easy tiger, trees that is!)

Near Haddington, but far enough away to be in the countryside, the cottage is a wee suntrap and no doubt will prove a good change of pace & lifestyle for us...

So ... while many of you may be larging it up at T in The Park, I'll be moving boxes, building beds and may even have a wee P in the Dark.

Album Launch at Voodoo Rooms

Just a note to sat thanks to all who attended our album launch on Friday 27th June 2008.

Hoochie Fig played a blinder of a set and special thanks to Keith for chumming to the pub once I'd dropped my drum kit back home!

The whole band (Ten Storeys High) played a blinder too even if I say so myself....

The Proclaimers at Edinburgh Castle

July 19th sees myself & Kenny MacDonald directing and filming (alongside MCL of Edinburgh) the Edinburgh Castle Concert by The Proclaimers.

I will be working closely with the manager Kenny MacDonald on the production and with 6 cameras we should produce a pretty good live concert movie.

We'll be shooting extensive extra footage from back stage, the crowd and maybe even in the dressing room with special VIP guests and friends of the band.

Saw the most amazing set by Skindred last night in Glasgow.

This band blow me away every time.

Why the hell are they not huge in the UK! Bloody work- shy record labels...

Benji Webbe is probably the most animated, charismatic and mental performer I have ever seen. Since the days of Dub War (saw them at Reading Fest 1995 I think), I have followed the progress and have to admit, I am a fan. (nope, not a stalker)

Matthew Draper was born in Staffordshire in 1973. He now lives and works in Edinburgh. He graduated from Falmouth College of Arts with a BA Hons in Fine Art in 1995.

He has enjoyed success at solo shows in Edinburgh and has exhibited widely in Scotland, Cornwall and London. In 2000 he won the Alexander Graham Munro Travel Award from the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. White Space is the only gallery to exhibit his work in Devon.

Things are going really well and she is busy as hell with readings and her church work.

She recently worked at the "Gilvenbank" with Hazel Blair (her sister and my godmother/auntie) and Margaret Reid in aid of "The Maggies Centre".
Maggies is so important to so many people by helping everyone who goes through the door who is suffering or has someone who is suffering from cancer.

Back when I was a lad, when we lived in Gosport... around 9 years old, my Mum & Dad took us to a fun fair in Southsea Hampshire with my wee brother George & cousins Steven & Gordon Marwick.

As you can see from the picture, we weren't the most daring of young guns!

Notice, in the background is my Auntie Hazel & Uncle Sid asking the operator to let us all off!

Buckley's Chance and Petrol 3

So, digging around in my old pic archive I recently came across a couple of shots of the band Petrol 3 whom I played a little bass & even some scratching on the turntables at a few gigs (we weren't that prolific!) Big John Duncan of The Exploited, Goodbye Mr McKenzie & Nirvana fame was on guitar alongside Iain Fugue on samples, blips etc, Lisa Boa on vox and Road on drums.

The cowboy shot is me playing a gig to commemorate the last ever night at Leith's famed Homes Bar for our good friend Pat. I stepped in to play drums for Buckley's Chance as their drummer was vacant. On guitars for Buckleys is Malcolm Ross who you may remember as being the guitarist for Aztec Camera, Josef K & Orange Juice.

More gigs with Buckley's Chance soon I hope... Good 'ole country music.

Edinburgh's local organic food market & home delivery service, Earthy, launched on Thursday 1st May in Ratcliffe Terrace in Edinburgh.

Chris, Dirk, Pete & Patricia as well as their amazing team, launched their new business in style.

I am proud to have been the official photographer for this new venture and over the past year have jumped around Scotland photographing suppliers farms, many an animal and the producers themselves... Ruined 2 pairs of trainers (idiot! Adidas 3 stripes are not built for chasing cows around in the sleet!)

Goonhilly - To The Stars and Beyond

My lass, Julia & I had ourselves a wee trip to Devon & Cornwall... amazing scenery, top food and made a few really strange new pals too!

We visited many places but one that sticks out to me was Goohilly (being into space and all that!)

Set in the dramatic landscape of the Lizard Peninsula Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station rises up from the heathland. Goonhilly was once the world's largest earth station with over 60 dishes pointing into space.

Goonhilly was responsible for sending and receiving millions of telephone calls, TV pictures, faxes and internet connections around the globe, it was the first earth station to receive "live" TV images from America and broadcast "Live Aid" back in 1985, which became the most watched TV show in history!

Anyhoo, if you are down that way, you should visit... well worth the trip.

Very happy to have helped Edinburgh's The Graeme Mearns Band launch their debut album; Some Kind Of Bliss.

I designed the CD release which features the stunning artwork by Julia Douglas entitled 'DIY Home Comforts'.

The shot to the right is featured on the back of the album. I shot this in sunny Leith just outside the offices of Edinburgh's Digital Face design agency.

Wickerman Festival

Went to the Wickerman Festival last year. Got to say, it's one of the best I've been to. Family friendly, no neds fleeing about off their faces on Buckfast nicking your stuff in the campsite!

We were there with The Proclaimers who headlined the main stage on the Sunday. Top night, and when they lit the wickerman, a fair few thousand 'happy' people watched on in awe...

This year's festival is on 25th & 26th July.

Ten Storeys High have just been selected to support The Proclaimers on a leg of their tour, which might make you expect a much more pared-back affair than this single offers. True, ‘Good Things’ does open with a gently strummed acoustic guitar, but there’s a laidback, dreamy quality to the song that’s more reminiscent of the likes of Keane or Kubb than the ginger twosome. A sliver of well-crafted, intelligent acoustic pop, this probably has no chance of troubling the chart, but it’s certainly worth hunting down for those lazy Sunday mornings. Good things, after all, come to those who wait.

Back in September, I collaborated with my good friends Reuben Paris (photographer) & Martin Smith (Film Maker) on a project called Peripheral Vision.

The concept was simple.

Three Edinburgh artists from different backgrounds have come together on a project that seems more like a challenge of Kiefer Sutherland's ‘24’ proportions than an art exhibition.
The results, which will be displayed at The Village on South Fort St, Edinburgh will not be seen until the 1st night of the exhibition as the artists have given themselves just 48hours to realize
and complete the artwork.

Ten Storeys High Album Mastered

The debut album from the band I play in, Ten Storeys High, has just this week been mastered by audio impresario Micheal Hall of Scuba Z, Vanishing American Family & The Lost Soul Band fame...

It's sounding fantastic and we will be receiving the cover artwork soon so watch this space.

We recorded the Ten Storeys High debut album at the Sound Cafe in the Pentlands with the amazing engineer/producer Dave Gray. We seemed to get the most amazing sound from my Mapex Pro M kit. The great lads at Drum Central in Edinburgh sorted me out,
they always do! Cheers Mini & Vince.

This has to be the most beautifully devised ... amazingly shot and ultimately... inspiring music feature film.

The Killing Joke Cometh!

The truly awesome and formidable Killing Joke return to Glasgow in October as part of their world tour.

I saw them at the ABC in 2006 with my mate Iain Fugue (Molotov Records & Petrol3 fame) and the gig was ear bleedingly loud but most enjoyable (good metal review eh?).

'Was a massive fan back in the 'Eighties' (I'm livin' in the eighties) and really got fired up when they released the album Killing Joke in 2003. Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell is also never far from my ears via the iPhone.

Actually, I recall driving to Manchester with the Fugue to attend 'In The City' music conference which was run by the late, great Tony Wilson (sadly missed). Due to the Killing Joke album, I think we made it down the motorway in record time!

Asterooooooooooooooooooooooid!

Anyhoo, a most fun packed weekend was had, a footlong! and a fair few bevvies. Iain never took his hat off though, not even in the twin room we had... (is he a supernatural whom can grow hat shaped hair!?!)

Right, I'm waffling.... will be at the ABC on Oct 18th to see this jaw-dropping outfit. All you readers (all 3 of you) should seriously consider the gig too.

Kirkcaldy Bands!

So, when I was 16, I auditioned for my 1st band... I ended up playing drums for a band called The Twist in Kirkcaldy.

We played many a gig with bands such as The Ghost Train, Family Shampoo, The Silent Falls & The Receiving End.

From Newport in Wales, this powerhouse of 'Ragga Metal' are the most amazing thing I have ever seen live.

I loved Dub War, Benji's previous band but Skindred really have to be plauded for their energy, songs and attitude.
